OMG - You look like a Parisian Whore!
Ahhhh!!!!I've just been to the most awful party! It was the birthday party of one of my husband's old friends, whom I don't know very well. We were *told* that it was to be a 1940's party, so, as I love any excuse to dress up in fancy clothes, I went to town and rifled through my drawers until I could find something suitably theatrical. I found a low-ish cut black dress that looked a bit vintage and some fishnet stockings, little black velvet hat, elbow length silk gloves and some high heeled shoes, curled my hair, put on some sparkly jewelery and hey! I'm a Parision Whore - or so they exclaimed when I walked in and found - to my horror - that no-one else had bothered to dress up! What made it even worse was I didn't know anyone there, couldn't even break the ice with anyone and bit by bit sank lower into the chair until I (almost) disappeared. (Grimaces)My hubby hadn't made quite such an effort but I did manage to force him into a cravat - I gave him a few lessons in tying, although I think there's definitely room for improvement. Cravet-tying being an art in itself. We made a furtive early exit and sidled off to the pub, shedding articles of costumery along the way :0

I wouldn't be embarrassed one single bit Igraine...your costume sounds fantastic ...it is the host and hostess, and the other guests who should be embarrassed...they either did not make the dress code or lack thereof clear, or they did not follow through on their own party theme...And then to say you looked like a whore??!! In the book of bad manners, that is pond scum!! Be thankful they are not your friends. I personally would have *loved* to have seen your costume..it sounds darling! You'll be laughing about this later...I guarantee!
Ouch!If it's any consolation, darlin', I can't imagine you looking 'bad' in anything. LOL! Here's a hug to cushion the sting. :k
I so agree with iorhael94. While it is a bit discomfiting to be at a party and not be dressed the same as others, it was certainly not your fault and nothing to be embarassed about. *Whoever made the Parisian Whore comment* should be ashamed. As should the host/hostess for calling a fancy dress party, and then not following through themselves. Be glad you don't have to socialize with these kinds of folks more often.I get the feeling you'd have had a bad time with this bunch even if you hadn't gone dressed up. I can't believe they left you to sink into the chair...I would love to see piccies if you took them!*smooches*Hewene
My goodness, that is a pure Bridget Jones moment. I suppose it's not their fault they all dressed as complete bores. ;)

Bridget Jones! Oh, my, we've all been there...But sounds like your outfit was wonderful - and how much fun! Hope you're enjoying by now; what a lovely gift to the hosts to have done this for them.
Touche Peachy! LOL!
Ooooh, I'd love to look like a Parisien whore. :DAs someone who always gets it wrong (if everyone is dressed to the nines, I'm in jeans; if they're all in jeans, I'm all dressed up), I so sympathise. They do indeed sound boring people.

Oh, sweetie! I bet you looked fab in that get-up. :)I think it is the height of bad manners to issue a fancy dress party invitation and then not dress up oneself. As for the others who didn't dress up ... what a bunch of boring gits!My Bridget Jones moment was when I, too, dressed up for a fancy dress party. I spent £15 on a wonderful pink Regency dress and feathers and headdress - I was going as Josephine, you see - from a local fancy dress hire shop. And I walked into that bloody party and NOBODY ELSE HAD DRESSED UP. Except the host. He had dressed up. But nobody else had bothered. Un-frickin-believable. I was so disgusted with everybody I got very morose and tipsy and insisted on going home early. I felt sorry for Mark, whose party it was. But then, he shouldn't have befriended such very boring people. :D:D:D:D£15! GITS!!!!!!
Those people sound not only boring, but boorish.I'll bet you looked marvelous. Hope your evening improved once you got to the pub!
A similar thing happened to me, many years ago. My first hubby and me went to a fancy dress party - me as a (very fetching, I thought!) 1920s flapper and he as Groucho Marx and of course .... only a couple of other people had bothered to dress up!I bet you looked beautiful, Aisling - much more stunning than all the other boring old farts!!! *hugs*
Laughing already, sweetie! ;)At least I went and made an effort - as it was the birthday party of someone I've never been very keen on I had plenty of reasons not to bother. At least I had a good excuse to sneak off early. She was the only other person who had dressed up and arrived fashionably late. As for the comment - I *think* it was meant as a kind of back handed compliment but still .... uk!
Thanks for the hug (and the compliment!) You haven't seen me in my pink dressing gown! :k
Oh, I have no evidence, I'm afraid! :DYou're right about those people as well - they're friends from my hubby's past who I've got to know a little, through him, as they were quite close at one time. The woman who's party it was has always been pretty cold with me and I honestly don't know why she asked us because I felt beneath her notice the whole time I was there.I think everyone else avoided dressing up (or were warned off!) so as not to overshadow her! (meeeoooow!) ;)
*grins*Too right! :-)
Thanks Nota! :-)I did enjoy dressing up and even though I felt a complete fool, I certainly made an impression!
Hey - sounds like the same party! At least I didn't spend £15I jump at the chance of dressing up - why are people do boring?
Yes, thanks, we met a good friend who is both genuine and very good company, as well as being a fellow "Lotr changed my life" person. I wanted to hug him - it was such a relief!
Thanks babe! :k It very disapointing when you've made an effort, isn't it? I love 1920's clothes - how wonderful, and how crap of other people not to bother. Grrrr > dull people. :(
Yes it is disappointing. My mum went to a lot of trouble making the dress for me, too! Some people are very uninspiring :(:k :k
Ooo... definitely sounds like a crowd to avoid! Yeep!Hewene
I bet you looked marvellous sweetie, I wish I could have seen you and of course we could have met. I guess we would have had a wonderful evening with lots and lots of talking *huggles*
Ohh that party!!! :ONow that's one memory I don't want to revisit, and yes, I'm sure it would have been much more enjoyable in some good company!*Huggles you back*
